Before 1990 sliding doors were known about but had a very bad reputation. We often talk to people who remember them from their childhood either their grandparents home or their friends or own family home. With memories of them coming off the tracks or the bearings being so poor that they did not slide with a smooth action. Noisy and wobbly and often a dirt trap either in the channel in the floor or on the pelmet up above. Much of the product on the market at the time was difficult to install and the quality of the finished job was left up to the skill of the installer. It was in 1989 that a company called Eclisse was created with a mission to change all of that and produce a product that worked!
The success that Eclisse achieved was immediate and has continued to grow. The idea was simple, to create a strong, easy to fit solution that was consistent in its quality and that would last. Innovative thinking would free us of all the old problems associated with the product.
The Eclisse system appeals to architects, interior designers, house builders, self builds and refurbishment projects to name but a few. As the way we heat our homes changes so does the way we divide the space up. As time has moved on so has the functionality of the home and the desire for more facilities. In 1800s there were homes built with no bathrooms and indoor WCs but those same homes now have all the modern facilities that we would expect to see in a new build. A small 2-3 bedroom home will have 1-2 bathrooms and a downstairs cloakroom.
About Cheshire Design Centre
In about 2004 I took over an old warehouse unit in Congleton Cheshire and with a background in bath manufacture and a degree in design I started to trade in bathroom equipment. I needed a door for my office and decided it would be better to have a sliding door mounted on the inside wall so I looked on the internet and found an image of what was later to become the Vetroglide. At that time Eclisse were showing the product that looked just right. A phone call to the company resulted in a meeting with the owner of Eclisse UK and he showed me the pocket door system. It was fairly new to the market and it was new to me. In those early years the expression ‘pocket door’ was little used and they were promoted as disappearing sliding doors. We decided to install some showroom displays and so ordered a couple of standard single systems one with a frosted ‘Satin’ glass and one with a typical panelled door. As we developed the showroom and more rooms were added we increased our displays with a telescopic system and some double door systems. Throughout this time I still had no office door; the product that I had originally seen was never introduced and whilst I had started selling the Eclisse pocket door systems they did not have a surface mounted solution for me. And then the phone call came and my friend called me to say that he was trialling a new surface mounted door and that if I was still interested then I could now get one.
Cheshire Design Centre is one of the oldest customers of Eclisse UK and has enjoyed the relationship ever since we first met. I now have a door on my office and the expression ‘Pocket Door’ is understood by architects, designers and the trade in general. The name Eclisse is synonymous with quality and the fitters like to install them as they are quick easy and robust. Eclisse have been successful because they have a good product at the right price.
